I think one point Dr. Aiken fails to bring into this conversation is the difference in New wine and old or fermented wine. When Jesus turned the water into wine at the wedding feast it was referred to as the best wine. Because of our culture we suppose that "best wine" is fermented. I suggest that in a day when water was bad and intoxicating wine was old and fermented the best wine was the wine that had just been squeezes out of the grapes. Which would imply that Jesus could have drank only new wine and never violated the commandment in Proverbs that says don't even look on it when it moves in the cup a reference to fermentation. I have a hard time believing that Jesus would make a bunch of intoxicating wine at a wedding for everyone to get drunk. It would be like Dr. Aiken bringing 50 kegs of beer to a campus cookout and then holding himself guiltless for all of those that got drunk.

Excellent summary. I pondered that passage the last time I read through the book of Luke, and came to the same conclusions.

Your article adequately addresses the issue of Jesus' day, but I anticipate your next article will address scriptures and precepts that are applicable to our day and the importance of guarding our testimonies and not becoming a cause for stumbling.
