Benjamin,

One of greatest and most powerful works of the Holy Spirit is bringing a spiritually dead soul to life (Ezek. 36:27; John 3:5; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5), which He ordinarily accomplishes in conjunction with the revelation of the gospel (Rom. 10:14-17; Heb. 4:12-13).

Moreover, where the gospel is proclaimed and the Spirit is at work enlightening and regenerating sinners, one will also find those who, despite the Spirit's work of enlightenment and conviction, close their spiritual eyes to the light (John 9:40-41) and harden their heart to the truth (Heb. 3:12-13; 2 Cor. 2:15-16). I think this still happens today. Accordingly, I'm not of the persuasion that the warning passages of Hebrews (e.g., Heb. 3:12-13), for example, only apply to first century people. I think they still have teeth today and that it's possible to so harden oneself against the truth that there remains no possibility of repentance and efficacious application of Christ's atoning work (Heb. 6:4-6; Heb. 10:26).

Hope this is helpful.

Your servant,
Bob Gonzales

A very interesting meditation, brother. I have profited from it and was glad to be able to read your thoughts on this. I have one question which pertains to an important argument you make regarding the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. I know that this is a difficult question and, for what it is worth, I think you handled it well.

You said something, however, that I would like to appreciate better:

. . .and the Holy Spirit still manifests His power today. Therefore, I think it is still possible to commit blasphemy against the Spirit in our day, especially where Christ’s gospel and the Spirit’s power are abundantly manifest.

What did you mean by these references to the Spirit manifesting His power today? You conclude that blasphemy against Him is still possible on the basis that His power is "abundantly manifest," so I was interested in what you had in mind. Thank you for the time and effort you devote to helping others. May the LORD judge you faithful.
